During this semester of art I have had some very positive art projects. I feel like I have grown into an extra-gently better artist than when I had started the semester. Throughout the semester I became more creative, and started to have a lot of ideals on my own. I can give most of the credit to Mrs. Gardner for helping me break out of my shell and become creative.
Comparing the first piece of artwork to my last piece is a immense difference in creativity and neatness. At the beginning I would look up pictures on the internet of my favorite artists and draw album covers, their apartment, etc. There is nothing wrong with drawing something that has already been made but I knew that i was more creative than that. For almost all of my projects all year I had been just contouring things I would look up but during the home stretch I started to have ideas of my own and created artwork I am more than proud of. I started thinking to myself what their next album cover could look like rather than drawing ones that had already been made. My last piece of artwork was an Earl Sweatshirt possible album cover. I had opened his face and put odd future donuts in the middle as if you were to look inside and you would see odd future in him. On the side of the paper I drew the famous “OFWGKTA” sang with different designs in the letters. As well as writing the name Earl on the bottom and drawing a odd future sweatshirt as his last name which I thought was very creative on my part. Comparing this drawing to my other album cover drawing of mac miller at the beginning of the year I have made humongous leaps as an artist.
A Specific piece that I value other than the Earl Sweatshirt creation I just talked all about would be my Kanye West “Teddy” drawing. As everyone knows Kanye’s iconic Teddy Bear figure he has used in every single album cover he’s ever completed; I thought to do something with the Teddy and his presidential debate. As Kanye went crazy at the VMAs saying he was running for president is 2020; I took that and kept it in my head and thought it would make a great art project. I made a Teddy that represents Kanye in 2020 if he actually decides he is qualified and ready to run for president. I had him in front of thousands of other “Teddies” which represented the people that would follow him through his campaign. As I also had the 2020 tattooed on his forehead representing that it will be held on his head for saying he is running for president. I feel almost as if he has to run for president after saying what he did and that it is almost a part of him now. So I drew a tattoo on his head. I also had 100 dollar bills everywhere in the drawing. These hundred dollar bills weren’t Benjamin Franklin oddly enough. I had drawn The “Teddy” that represents Kanye on the bill. I was hoping to portray how he thinks he will be head of everything and Kanye being Kanye I figure he would do something as put is face of the 100 dollar bill. I thought it was a humorous representation.
My entire body of artwork has a pretty obvious theme to it. In almost every drawing I’ve created this semester it has had something to do with the hip-hop industry. In every drawing I’ve made it has included a hip-hop artist or rapper that I admire. During the beginning of the semester I had a spirt of Mac Miller obsession with his album releasing. I’ve always been a huge fan of Mac Miller and he had not released a project in about two and half years. So when this album had finally released this year I was more than ecstatic. It inspired me to make all the projects of him that I did. The first was his GO:OD am album cover, as well as him posing for a picture prior to its release. I had also drew his face on my T-shirt design contest entry. Although I was late to turn it in so it did not even qualify. After my obsession simmered down i moved on to other artists I liked such as Kanye, Odd Future, Chance the Rapper, and Drake. I obviously like more artists than this but these are all the ones i had some sort of inspiration to create something about. What matters about my artwork is that I loved making every single project I worked in throughout the semester. There was never a project I became bored with. I loved the process throughout every project of hip-hop artists I had done. There were some though situations where I did not know how to make a certain thing look the way I wanted, But i could always count on Mrs. Gardner to help me when I was lost. She always knew how a certain thing should be seen, look like, and what color it should be.
This semester of art has been the best art class I have ever been apart of. Not because I had a lot of friends but because I’ve actually seen myself grow as an artist. The only person I give credit to for that is Mrs. Gardner. Thanks to this semester I know have things to hang up on my wall at home as well. Thank-you Mrs Gardner!
